Automatic Pool Cleaners for Above Ground Pools

Hand Held Automatic Pool Cleaners

These pool cleaners are spot cleaners that can be used for small above-ground pools, blow up pools and spas. These cleaners either have rechargeable batteries or require the use of regular alkaline batteries. They offer an economical solution for cleaning above ground pools.

Above-Ground Suction Pool Cleaners

These above-ground pool cleaners work by installing a hose into your skimmer and it uses your pump and filter system to provide the suction for the movement of the cleaner. These suction type above-ground pool cleaners are easy to use and many even offer leaf debris canisters that installs in the hose line to keep debris from collecting in your pump basket.

The pros of suction above-ground pool cleaners:

  • Does not use additional electricity but uses your pumps own power to operate.
  • Cleans pool floor.
  • Very few moving parts to break or replace.
  • Can use a skim vac plate or a leaf debris canister to keep leafs and debris from getting in pump basket.
  • Low in cost.

The cons of suction above-ground pool cleaners:

  • If your filter is dirty or your pump size inadequate it will negatively effect the performance and movement of the cleaner.
  • Will not clean the walls but only the floor.
  • You must have a flat smooth floor for proper operation. Will not work on dished out or above ground pools with slopes.
  • If you do not use a leaf canister or skim vac, leaves and debris will collect in your pump basket. Because above-ground pools are flooded suction, this can be a nuisance.
  • You need to "prime" the cleaner by making sure that the hose is full of water and air has been eliminated prior to hooking it to your skimmer or the cleaner will not operate.

Above-Ground Pressure Pool Cleaners

Pressure above-ground pool cleaners work by installing a hose onto the return fitting in your pool. It uses your pools pump pressure to propel it around your pool. This pressure sprays out of a hose and forces the leafs and debris into a bag that is attached to the cleaner.

The Pros of Pressure Above-Ground Pool Cleaners:

  • No additional electricity needed to operate but pool pump must be running.
  • Debris collects in a separate bag rather than in the pump basket.
  • Cleans pool floors and walls.
  • Can be used on pools with uneven or dished bottoms.

The cons of pressure above-ground pool cleaners:

  • If your filter is dirty or your pump size inadequate it will negatively effect the performance and movement of the cleaner.
  • Pool pump must be operating to use cleaner.
  • Many require that you use their special return fitting and have to replace your existing fitting with this one.

Above-Ground Robotic Pool Cleaners

Robotic above-ground pool cleaners work by simply pluging them in and putting them in the pool. Above-ground robotic pool cleaners will not clean the walls and require flat bottom pools. They do not require the pump and filter to be running to use them. They store all of the debris they pickup in a filter bag inside of the robotic above-ground pool cleaner.
